As my little ones grow older, I’m always considering ways to infuse purpose into not just our everyday routines, but also the memorable occasions like Easter! Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate the slow, uneventful days, but I truly adore making those special memories with my little ones. During the Christmas season, I had met up with my friend and mentor and she kindly shared with me some cherished traditions she established with her children when they were young. Her words and memories have left a profound impact on me and I often reflect on crafting my own cherished traditions with my own kids. This simple and enjoyable activity has quickly become a beloved addition! Get ready to read all about this Easy and Fun Faux Stained Glass Activity for Easter.
What Supplies You Will Need.
The supplies are incredibly simple; you likely already have half of them at home! All you need is washable paint, painter’s tape, paint brushes, paper plate, and dish soap—easy as that! You can find all these supplies at your nearby grocery store. However, if you prefer the convenience of Amazon delivery like I do ( sometimes it’s more convenient than taking two small children to the store.), I’ll include a list at the end of this post for easy adding to your cart!
Easy Faux Stained Glass Activity for Easter
In the mornings, my little ones always enjoy discussing our plans for the day. It’s one of the first things my 3-year-old asks about, along with whether everyone had a good sleep—it’s adorable. When I mentioned that I had a fun and meaningful craft planned that involved painting, they immediately became excited and asked to do it right after breakfast, which made me even more excited!
I began the faux stained glass display by making the focal point a cross, serving as a reminder of the debt Jesus paid for us all. Once you’ve created your focal point, you have two options for the rest of the design. You can either create large sections with painter’s tape around the focal point, or you can make smaller sections. I opted to tear the painter’s tape into small pieces because I bought thicker painters tape so I thought smaller sections would make it more colorful. Next year, I’ll be making some changes, but I’ll go into that shortly.

Once you have the painter’s tape arranged just how you want it, then the real fun starts! Grab your paper plates, squeeze some paint onto them, and let the painting begin! My little ones were absolutely loving it—they were having the best time with their paintbrushes! It was such a joy for me to witness each step unfolding, and I was eagerly anticipating peeling back that painter’s tape to reveal the final outcome!
Creating Intentional Conversations
Our children learn best when we engage with them through active play and one-on-one time. I’ve observed that my son asks the most thought-provoking questions when I take the time to listen and hear him. So I take advantage of that! I talked about why I chose the cross for our Easter window decoration and why it means something every time we look at it. We also took the time to pray and hope that when our neighbor kids would see it that we could have the chance to talk about Jesus with them too.
This easy and fun faux stained glass activity for Easter became more than just a craft; it became a devotional time for us that my children were able to understand and remember.
What I will Change for Next Year
You know, there were definitely some lessons learned and things I’ll do differently next year when we do this with the kids. First off, I’ll go for some thicker paint for our windows. We used my trusty go-to non-toxic paint, but it turned out a bit too translucent for this activity. I’m thinking maybe two coats would have made the colors pop more but we only did one, so I would recommend more bold paint you can find here. This paint set also comes with color coordinated cups so you can ditch the paper plates..which leads me to my next lesson learned
I would also start off with one color at a time and then build my colors on my plate or maybe one color per plate. My littles were smearing the colors together and by the end, we were looking a little brown rather than colorful! So a color coordinated paintbrush and cup would make for a better more vibrant faux stained glass window!
Lastley, I would buy smaller strips of painters tape and make the areas larger to paint in. It just seems like it would be easier to separate the colors if you have little children that like to swish them all together!
Overall, I am extremely happy with the turn out, these are just awesome mental notes for next year to make the faux stain glass more vibrant!
Final Thoughts.
One thing I absolutely love about how this activity turned out is when I walk by the room that this painted window is in and when the sunlight hits just right, the casting shadows of the faux stained glass mural stretches across the floor of the room. It’s so fun and amazing to see! This activity truly did become an instant favorite, and although we might come up with more creative focal points as the years come, this is a family tradition I will be looking forward to every spring.
